This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey area extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>

These minor components may be indicated as special features. If they have a minimal effect on use and management, or could not be precisely located, they may not be indicated on the map. A map unit has specified kinds of soils or miscellaneous areas (map unit components), each with a designated range in proportionate extent. Map units include one or more kinds of soil or miscellaneous area. Miscellaneous areas are areas that have little or no recognizable soil. Specific National Cooperative Soil Survey standards and procedures were used in the classification of soils, design and name of map units, and location of special soil features. These standards are outlined in Agricultural Handbook 18, Soil Survey Manual, 1993, USDA, NRCS; Agricultural Handbook 436, Soil Taxonomy, 1995, USDA, NRCS; and all Amendments; Keys to Soil Taxonomy, (current issue) USDA, NRCS; National Soil Survey Handbook, title 430-VI,(current issue) USDA, NRCS. The actual composition and interpretive purity of the map unit delineations were based on data collected by scientists during the course of preparing the soil maps. Adherence to National Cooperative Soil Survey standards and procedures is based on peer review, quality control, and quality assurance. Quality control is outlined in the memorandum of understanding for the soil survey area and in documents that reside with the Natural Resources Conservation Service state soil scientist. Four kinds of map units are used in soil surveys: consociations, complexes, associations, and undifferentiated groups. Consociations - Consociations are named for the dominant soil. In a consociation, delineated areas use a single name from the dominant component in the map unit. Dissimilar components are minor in extent. The soil component in a consociation may be identified at any taxonomic level. Soil series is the lowest taxonomic level. A consociation that is named as a miscellaneous area is dominantly that kind of area and minor components do not significantly affect the use of the map unit. The total amount of dissimilar inclusions of other components in a map unit generally does not exceed about 15 percent if limiting and 25 percent if nonlimiting. A single component of a dissimilar limiting inclusion generally does not exceed 10 percent if very contrasting. Complexes and associations - Complexes and associations consist of two or more dissimilar components that occur in a regularly repeating pattern. The total amount of other dissimilar components is minor extent. The following arbitrary rule determines whether complex or association is used in the name. The major components of an association can be separated at the scale of mapping. In either case, because the major components are sufficiently different in morphology or behavior, the map unit cannot be called a consociation. In each delineation of a complex or an association, each major component is normally present though their proportions may vary appreciably from one delineation to another. The total amount of inclusions in a map unit that are dissimilar to any of the major components does not exceed 15 percent if limiting and 25 percent if nonlimiting. A single kind of dissimilar limiting inclusion usually does not exceed 10 percent. Undifferentiated groups - Undifferentiated groups consist of two or more components that are not consistently associated geographically and, therefore, do not always occur together in the same map delineation. These components are included in the same named map unit because their use and management are the same or very similar for common uses. Generally they are grouped together because some common feature, such as steepness, stoniness, or flooding, determines their use and management. If two or more additional map units would serve no useful purpose, they may be included in the same unit. Each delineation has at least one of the major components, and some may have all of them. The same principles regarding the proportion of minor components that apply to consociations also apply to undifferentiated groups. The same principles regarding proportion of inclusion apply to undifferentiated groups as to consociations. Minimum documentation consists of three complete soil profile descriptions that are collected for each soil added to the legend, one additional per 3,000 acres mapped; three 10 observation transects for each map unit, one additional 10 point transect per 3,000 acres. A defined standard or level of confidence in the interpretive purity of the map unit delineations is attained by adjusting the kind and intensity of field investigations. Field investigations and data collection are carried out in sufficient detail to name map units and to identify accurately and consistently areas of about 2.5 acres.</measDesc>

A revised soil mapping legend was established in the 1950's and mapping was updated during the late 1960's. An evaluation of the updated mapping indicated that the mapping was not adequate for a modern order two soil survey due to significant changes in landuse, soil classification, soil interpretations, and soil mapping standards and procedures.</stepDesc>

The soil scientists conducting the survey observed the soils in the field, described and sampled the soils, and analyzed the samples in the laboratory. The portion of the state covering the Scituate Reservoir watershed (approximately 93 square miles) was digitized, under contract, by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. The remainder of the state was digitized by Hammon Jensen, Wallen &amp; Associates using ArcInfo, version 4.0.1. The contracts were prepared and held by the University of Rhode Island, Environmental Data Center, with cooperative review by the SCS. SCS personnel edited the proof plots provided by the contractors. (NOTE: At the completion of this process, the Rhode Island Board of Governors of Higher Education copyrighted the spatial soils data. The USDA SCS subsequently entered into a licensing agreement with the Board which limits the NRCS's distribution of the data to formats other than the ArcInfo export format).</stepDesc>

The color infrared aerial photography was used for identifying and compiling changes in urban areas, gravel pits, and water areas that were not indicated on the publication imagery. Soil lines were adjusted to fit water areas. Soil lines were not adjusted to fit single line streams indicated on the compilation base. Supervision of the recompilation was provided by Soil Conservation Service staff. Actual work was performed by contract with the URI-EDC staff and SCS staff. <stepDesc>The RI600 Spatial data was downloaded from the Soil Data Mart on 20081206 and was re-projected from NAD 83 UTM Zone 19 to RI State Plane feet NAD 83 using ArcMap 9.2 projection tool. An attribute join table (called "soilattr")was created using Microsoft Access, the attribute table from the 1996 RIGIS soils data was apended to the RI600 attribute table and modifications made, fields added, and removed. This tabular data was then joined to the spatial data and a shape file called rigis_soils_polygons_2008 created.</stepDesc>

<stepDesc>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff established the Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) 144a Coastal Zone Soil Survey Project to map the subaqueous soil and sediment resources in Rhode Island. The coastal mapping on the Ninigret barrier was done by the State Soil Scientist of Rhode Island in 2007 and the coastal mapping on the Quonochontaug barrier was done by the Resource Soil Scientist in September 2009. The field mapping was compiled on 2008 4 inch aerial photos at a scale of 1:6000. The field mapping for the MLRA 144a - Coastal Zone Soil Survey was completed in May 2010. The USDA-NRCS staff in Warwick, Rhode Island downloaded the Soil Survey for the State of Rhode Island from the Soil Data Mart (SDM) in January 2009. The shapefiles were imported into an ARCGIS geodatabase. The coastal areas were digitized 'on-screen'. Adjustments to the existing soils data were made to create a seamless join to the coastal zone areas. The tabular data for all of the map units have been updated to current standards and have been reviewed and validated by the MLRA Soil Survey Region 12 staff in Amherst, Massachusetts. After the MLRA quality assurance review was completed, the seamless county geodatabase for the soil survey was forwarded to the certification team at the Michigan Digitizing Unit (MIDU) in East Lansing, Michigan.</stepDesc>

<stepDesc>The MIDU staff checked the spatial data with the ARCGIS Version 9.3 software. The boundaries of this soil survey were adjusted to match the adjacent soil surveys at the 0.1 meter tolerance. To remove excess vertices, the soil boundaries were generalized at a 1 meter tolerance. After the soil survey was edited, the area, line and point feature classes were converted to ARC/INFO coverages and exported as e00 files. The digital maps of the mapping units and the special soil features were imported into the ARC/INFO Version 9.3 software for review and certification. The MIDU staff checked the data with a set of ARC Macro Language (AML) programs developed by the USDA-NRCS National Cartographic and Geospatial Center (NCGC). The seamless coverages were checked using the July 2009 SSURGO Evaluation AML programs. Upon successful completion of the SSURGO Evaluation, the state coverages, feature file and the metadata were electronically transferred to the NRCS Staging Server to be joined with the tabular data.</stepDesc>

<stepDesc>(the following was adapted from https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detail/ri/soils/?cid=STELPRDB1242786) The 2014 soils data contains a complete re-digitization and classification of the soils for the entire RI Shoreline as part of the on-going Coastal Zone Soil Survey of RI (this fixes the "spatial shift" so beaches are accurately mapped). Beaches are now mapped and classified based on their dominate surface fragment size: Map unit Ba is dominated by sand and gravel surfaces, Baz is dominated by cobble to stone size surfaces, and Bax is mostly boulder (&gt; 24 inches) size surfaces. Several new coastal ponds and coves in Narragansett Bay are also included (such as Long Pond in Little Compton and Bissell Cove in North Kingstown) and the dunes and marshes along Narragansett Bay have also been re-digitized and classified to the series level. A fourth phase of the coastal zone soil survey is currently on-going and planned for release next year (2015). When the original soils data was digitized in the 1990’s the only available base map for use was USGS Topo Quads, as a result there is a “spatial shift” in the soils data when it is overlaid on modern orthophotography causing the soil map units to not align with the imagery perfectly. An effort has been underway to correct this error, for example Block Island was re-digitized last year to correct the shift (see 2012 update page). This 2013 soils version has re-digitized all of the major rivers and streams so they now match the orthophotography, the associated riparian areas and hydric soils (wetlands) along the flood plains were also adjusted to match the hydrography and elevation contours. In 2011 Rhode Island acquired a 1 meter resolution State-wide LiDAR elevation data set which was used to derive products that are extremely useful for modern day soils mapping. A state-wide set of 2 foot contours, wetness index (maps showing concave slopes where water is moving into), slopes, and curvature maps was produced and used for updating areas where the hydric soil (Rf map unit mainly) boundaries were incorrect due to the spatial shift (this was mainly done for Providence County). The lidar was also used to adjust the organic soils (swamps and bogs) in many areas of the state.</stepDesc>

The map unit symbol (MUSYM AND SOIL_NAME) uniquely identifies each closed map unit delineation. Each symbol corresponds to a map unit name (MUNAME). The map unit key (MUKEY) is used to link to information in the National Soil Information System tables. Map Unit Delineations are described by the National Soil Information System database. This attribute database gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and the properties for each soil.
